Community Survey: Proposed Waldorf School Purchase of City Property August 2026

The Waldorf School, located at the intersection of Robin Hood Road and Brookland Parkway,

has requested that the City of Richmond sell to it the decommissioned slip lane adjacent to

the school, along with the triangular green-space between the slip lane and Brookland

Parkway. The proposed purchase price for both properties is $100,792.48.

The materials supporting the ordinance provide for Waldorf to construct a 34-space parking lot in front of the school on Brookland Pkwy, and to redesign the traffic circulation for student drop-off and pick-up. The City Council is scheduled to consider Ordinance No. 2026-109 on September 28, 2026. Please review the attached pictures showing the project and its location.

Sherwood Park was designed in the late 19th century by Frederick Law Olmstead, a preeminent landscape architect of the time– designer of Central Park in NYC, the U.S. Capital grounds in Washington, DC, and the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. It is one of only two neighborhood landscapes in the country personally designed by him. The triangular greenspace in issue is specifically a part of the original Olmstead landscape design.

The Sherwood Park Civic Association Government Affairs and Safety Committee is seeking

input from neighborhood residents. As residents consider this proposal, there are a number of factors that may be important, including traffic and pedestrian safety, neighborhood character, preservation of public green space, protection of the historic Olmsted street configuration that is a defining feature of Sherwood Park, and the operational needs of the Waldorf School. This survey is intended to gather community feedback before the City Council takes action.
