Olmsted Network - from Robert Hood

Hi All,

At last week’s civic association meeting I discussed an opportunity for our neighborhood to join the Olmsted Network. This is a collection of parks and places designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, considered to be the father of landscape architecture in the United States. Some of his most recognized works include: Central Park (NY), Prospect Park (NY), The Biltmore Estate (NC), and the US Capital Grounds (DC).

Our neighborhood was his only landscape design contribution in Virginia. Brookland Pkwy was the only fully realized portion of his original design, other portions of the neighborhood include partial design elements/amended designs.

I have met with representatives of the Olmsted Network and they are very interested in us joining their network. They have already written a letter of support on our behalf to Kenya Gibson and the zoning commission, advocating for the preservation of our historic neighborhood in the zoning process.

What I still need to complete our submission are additional photos. I found a couple online and walked around SP taking pictures of various streets, etc. However, if anyone has any particularly nice photos that they believe represent our neighborhood and would like them included in our official submission please email them to me:

They requested horizontal photos (only). Also, they have specifically requested pictures of the crepe myrtles in bloom on Brookland Pkwy, so if anyone has a great shot of that it would be much appreciated.
