RVA APRIL SAFETY REMINDER

The City of Richmond continues efforts to make roadways safe for all through the Vision Zero principles of education, engineering and enforcement. Dedicated bike lines in Richmond provide safe lanes of travel for the many people who ride bicycles – but these lanes are less safe if motorists illegally park in them.

To increase awareness and education of the lanes, Mayor Danny Avula has initiated a month of safety reminders – violation warnings instead of citations – for drivers who park illegally in designated bike lanes.

In the month of April, Richmond Police Department officers and Richmond’s parking enforcement vendor will place a violation warning on the vehicle instead of a parking citation.

Starting May 1, citations will resume, with a civil penalty of $65 for vehicles parked in a designated bike lane.

“This safety initiative is a reminder to not park in or block bike lanes,” said Richmond Mayor Danny Avula. “It can be very dangerous for people who ride bikes and people who drive vehicles. Thank you for helping us keep Richmond roadways safe for all!”
